DeuS is working in Brazil to make a difference in the poorest areas of the country. By pulling kids off the streets and out of the favela's using Jiu Jitsu these academies are not only saving lives, but giving kids an opportunity and hope for a better future. DeuS Fight donates used good condition Gi's and provides on going financial assistance to these academies from the sale of their products. This not only provides these children with the equipment, food, and supplies they need to keep their programs going, but it also allows them to participate in occasional competitions to enhance their skills, motivate, and encourage them.
Terere Kids Project
In order to give back to the community where he was raised, five-time World Jiu Jitsu champion Fernando Terere began an after school program for the children of Cantagalo. The social project, which is located in Ipanema, provides free classes for children between the ages of 6-15. Then, at 16 years old, students pass to adult classes where they will continue to receive these free services.
The goal of the social project is to teach children one of the world’s most popular martial arts, while also teaching them to respect themselves, their instructors and their training partners. It also conditions them for the road ahead, so that they have the tools to further themselves beyond their poor economic situation. For the children of the Cantagala community, Jiu Jitsu also provides a safe environment away from the world of drugs and alcohol that is often found in poorest areas of Rio de Janeiro, the favelas. Through practicing Jiu Jitsu, students learn about the benefits of exercise and a healthy lifestyle and also work towards building a foundation for a better life.
Lions of Judah
Founded on April 24, 2009 by athletes Thiago Dias and Fernando Halfeld under Caio Terra, both are active members of the Baptist Church Resplendent Morning Star. The church provides support to the project in a variety of ways. The Lions of Judah Social Project uses Jiu Jitsu as its cornerstone for raising self-esteem and preparing young people to face the challenges imposed by life.
Also, the martial art teaches discipline, character, ethics, respect and love for others. Lions of Judah helps teach kids through both sport and religion solutions to mitigate situations of a social nature such as crime, violence, and drugs. This is especially true for them since they face these challenges daily.
To participate in the project, the children need to be enrolled in school (if possible), maintain good grades, and have good behavior on and off the mat. Through God and Jiu Jitsu, the Lions of Judah socialize and evangelize the youth and help others to be aware of the importance that these young people represent society's future.
